Madeira Valley of the Nuns Tour
3 h
Lisätietoja aktiviteetista
This is a journey to the center of Madeira Island where dramatic, cloud-topped mountains descend to verdant valleys in a most spectacular way.
After boarding the minibus in the center of Lido first make your way up to Eira do Serrado where you'll find one of the most exclusive and beautiful views, not to mention a great "green" location unlike any other in Madeira.
The journey down to the Nuns Valley (Curral da Freiras) village takes approximately 20 minutes where guests will enjoy the countryside, forest brushes mixed with populated areas with quaint houses typical of the Madeiran society.
Once the tour reaches Nuns Valley, you will immediately see a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island.
The huge cauldron in which Nuns Valley is sitting was either formed by erosion, which is the more recent theory, or as many still believe, by volcanic activity. The village is very isolated and locals mainly live off what they cultivate. The local chestnuts are delicious and are used in everyday cooking. Every year locals celebrate the 'Chestnut Festival' for which the village is famous.
Upon your return, stop at the stunning fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. This is were Winston Churchill spent his time painting his beautiful landscapes and were you will be able to try the famous local drink, Poncha.

The guide kept the pace of the tour moving, but still allowed time for side tours into several small towns so we had adequate time and opportunity for getting more of a feel for the culture and daily lives of the population. Good background was provided and was always available for questions and suggenstions.
Our voucher said hotel pick up but that was a joke. The driver/guide was rude but did provide commentary during the drive. At every stop, he gave us 15-20 minutes to do our own thing. There were no planned experiences at each stop.
My boyfriend and I went on this excursion in early January and it was fantastic. The guide was really knowledgeable and entertaining, pick-up was straightforward, and we saw a whole range of different places across southern part of the island throughout the afternoon. As we'd come on a cruise just for the day, it was an especially good way to see a lot of things before we had to leave in the evening. The only qualm I have is that I felt we hadn't really paid enough for such a good day out..!
A great tour. The driver was friendly and informative. The trip was well worth the money.
