In two hours, which passed very quickly, Helena provided a clear insight into the history of Russia from Tzar Nicholas through to post USSR. Interesting to learn the role of the Metropol Hotel and Bolshoi Theatre in the Revolution and to discover more about Moscow today.
Elena is enthusiastic and articulate. One of the best tours we have taken. She represented multiple points of view of the Communist era, so you learn why people still miss communism and why it failed, and differing perceptions of pros and cons of former leaders. The meeting place is in the big plaza at the end of Nikolskaya street (which has overhead hanging lights) where it meets Lubyanka Sq. Across the street from the Children's department store building. Toured July 31, 2019. California.
Great tour guide who had lots of knowledge and enthusiasm. This tour was full of historical facts, and how the past affects modern day Russia. It was really interesting and one of the best tours I took in Russia. Highly recommend!
A terrific tour that was both informative and enjoyable, and really added to my understanding of the city and its history. The guide was obviously very knowledgeable and put over the facts and figures in a very entertaining way. I'd thoroughly recommend the tour.
Our guide wove the history of the Soviet Union beautifully with this tour which covers only a short walking distance. We explored a bit of the city relevant to various political events starting opposite the Lubyanka, to Revolution Square, to the Bolshoi and Metropole Hotel (for Gentleman in Moscow fans) to Stalin having buildings moved to widen avenues, ending in Pushkin Square where the protests take place, in front of Izvestia offices Outstanding for history buffs.
We thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour by Alex. He is knowledgeable and very entertaining. He provided us with a good insight and perspective of the history and the communist revolution.
A very interesting tour of Moscow's different periods of time, starting from the transition from Tsarist rule to the Soviet regime and until the present days of capitalism. The tour emphasizes the contrasts, sometimes absurd, of the use of certain areas and buildings in central Moscow, throughout different times. What makes the tour particularly fascinating was the passion of our sharp and delightful guide, Irina, to her hometown and her sharing of her and her family's personal experiences in the extreme changing realities of life in Moscow. The tour is highly recommended for anyone visiting Moscow! Benjamin
I loved this tour! Our guide Marina was extremely personable and was able to share some interesting anecdotes about living in soviet russia. The tour was very informative and wasn't too taxing, the walking helped us stay warm in sub-zero Moscow. One of the most fascinating stories was how the government modernised the city centre in the 30s without destroying any buildings - they cut their foundations and moved whole buildings on rails, with the people still inside, to allow the creation of the wide boulevards and roads in the city today. If you're curious about early soviet history, I'd definitely recommend this tour.
This tour starts across the KGB building and then you would walk across Moscow to find some other tourist attraction. Guide would give the history of some places where the tour went to and it was very interesting--from the history of KGB, to moving buildings for bigger streets, and to propaganda posters inside a library. Would be nicer if the weather would also cooperate. The tour is 2-hour long so it would be best if you used the toilet before beginning the tour. During our tour, it was really cold and the tour needed to stop at a cafe just so everyone could get a bathroom break. LOL
We started out across the street from the building that was the KGB headquarters in Soviet times. Our tour guide had excellent English and a strong passion for the subject matter. She showed us a building that was being renovated and was the place where 40,000 Russians were sentenced to death. She pointed out details about the different views of Soviet times among Russians. She recommended that we go to the Museum of Contemporary History we went there the next day that was helped to complete the overview of this subject matter.
GREAT!! A wonderful experience trying to understand the communism in Russia with a clever and informative guide. I highly recommend
