Excursion to Kanheri Caves

This half-day tour of the mystical Kanheri caves is a must-do, especially for cave-architecture aficionados. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel lobby, and drive you to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park from where you begin your encounter of the Kanheri Caves. Known for being the largest Buddhist establishment in Western India, the Kanheri caves are filled with historical tales. Inscribed as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri in ancient script, Kanheri literally means 'Black Mountain'. The caves are said to be named after the black basaltic stones, of which they are made. Kanheri caves offer an insight into the evolution, decline and rebirth of Buddhism between 1st century B.C. and 11th century A.D. These caves served as the space of meditation for the Buddhists monks, and stand as testimony of their lives during the time. It is said that the monks used the 129 caves to shelter themselves from the rains, and wandered the region, throughout the year, to spread the teachings of Gautama Buddha. Most caves are simple or converted into monasteries and signify the simple life of the monks. Many caves have inscriptions in Brahmi script that haven't yet been deciphered or explained. It is believed that these inscriptions were made by Emperor Ashoka's contemporaries, attempting to introduce Buddhism in India. We also take a peek at the beautiful Magathane caves famously known for their Makara decorations. After being awe-struck by the ancient Buddhist way of life, it is time to drive back to your hotel where your tour concludes.
