Stop At: Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica, Viale Dei Romagnoli 717, 00119 Ostia Antica Italy
After a short journey on the metro, you’ll arrive at the old Roman seaport to explore its ancient ruins.
Once inside, you'll hear how the town served as the main harbor of the Roman republic. Take a look inside its old crematorium, aka the necropolis, and then visit the amphitheater where the Roman crowds roared as they were entertained.
Look inside the Thermal Baths of Neptune to admire its preserved mosaics and frescoes, and amble along ancient cobbles to the House of Diana — one of the town’s most important ruins.
After harking back to Ostia’s glory days, you’ll learn about the town at the end of the Roman Empire when the city slipped out of prominence. Hear about the Roman general Sulla, and the new set of city walls that were attributed to his time in power.

Nice way to see some of downtown....
Very good walking tour of the interesting and active archaeological site along the Lido train line.
We loved this tour! Ostia was so beautiful, and our guide Serena was knowledgeable and friendly. It felt like our group had the site almost to ourselves because there were zero crowds. This was a major contrast to the historic sites in the city itself. We had a Roma pass so we didn't have to pay for the train ticket which we thought was included or the entry to Ostia. We just had to pay for our headset which was not expected, but not expensive. The highlight, though, was Ostia. It was breathtaking. Additionally, once the tour was over we could stay at the site as long as we wished.
Tour didn't go ahead. Tried to r-ecomfirm a few days before, was told that they wouldn't make a decision about whether the tour was happening until the day before, based on numbers. They were supposed to ring me back with information but didn't. As the concierge at our accommodation said, Very unprofessional. Public transport would have been a better and cheaper option!
This half day tour outside the city was recommended by Rick Steves' Rome and it's well worth it. Here's where you really learn how the Romans lived their daily lives, with housing quarters, markets, bath houses, restaurants, recreation. Ancient city of immense size that your tour guide will bring to life. Our entire family including two 10 year old children have raved about it.
Great Tour and a great guide
