Itinerary

Stop At: Giardini La Mortella, Via Francesco Calise 39, 80075 Forio, Isola d'Ischia Italy
In 1949 the musician William Walton decided to settle on the island of Ischia with his Argentine wife Susana. The spouses built at the foot of Mount Zaro, a lava rock flow, a villa surrounded by a grandiose botanical garden. Today La Mortella is composed of two deeply different parts: La Valle, in fact, designed by Russell Page, characterized by a subtropical climate, moist and protected from the wind, and the Hill or upper garden, entirely designed and developed by Lady Walton, with areas sun-drenched and windswept and characterized by vegetation from the Mediterranean areas. In the upper garden there is the Thai room, surrounded by lotus flowers, bamboo and Japanese maples, the temple of the Sun, enriched by bas-reliefs by Simon Verity; the waterfall of the Crocodile; the Nymphaeum; the Greek Theater and the rock of William, a trachitic boulder placed on a promontory about 120 meters above sea level, where the ashes of the artist and his wife are kept.

I had difficulty catching the tour guide Roberta? as there was no any identification and she was not waiting for the clients in the meeting point but was constantly moving between different location - what a mess! It was a large group - we had no clear picture as to the itinerary, were not informed of lots LOTS! of walking - in the heat and under the sun 6 km in total. The guides were constantly collecting the cash from the clients - either for the lunch or for the garden entry both of which could had been easily avoided should these were included in the tour price, which too caused delays and inconvenience. The restaurant's location was great but they served the mediocre food and just an awful wine! The ONLY good part of the tour was the visit to the garden free time!. The tour was so poorly organized that I believe that most people who took it on that particular day would probably never go back to Ischia ever again. It's a pity really!
